Herbert Fisheries is a straightforward, no-frills spot tucked into Greater Sudbury’s Regent Street that specializes in classic fish and chips — a local staple done with fresh, often just-caught fish. It’s the kind of place where the focus is on the quality and freshness of the seafood, rather than a fancy dining atmosphere, making it a solid choice for a casual, satisfying meal.

Visitors often come here looking for a dependable, well-executed plate of fish and chips, with the pickerel and whitefish standing out as local favorites. The fish is lightly battered or even just dusted rather than heavily coated, giving a crisp exterior while keeping the fish flaky and light inside. This approach appeals more to folks who appreciate seafood done simply and authentically — it's clearly made with care rather than mass-produced or smothered in batter.

The fries are freshly cut and consistently come out crispy on the outside while staying soft within, a detail that many customers notice and appreciate. You can expect basic condiment options like vinegar, salt, pepper, and ketchup available freely, though tartar sauce generally comes in prepackaged Kraft packets rather than homemade, which some patrons mention as a minor downside.

The atmosphere is casual and efficient, with friendly staff who understand the local vibe — it’s an easy stop whether you’re passing through downtown or making a planned detour off the highway, especially for travelers returning from nearby outdoor spots like Killarney. It’s ideal for a quick lunch or early dinner, especially when you want to taste fish that’s fresh off the lake without fuss.

Beyond the restaurant, Herbert Fisheries operates as a licensed market where you can order fresh or frozen fish caught daily in the region — including whitefish fillets, lake trout, pickerel, perch, and pike. This adds a local, community-driven dimension for residents looking to take home quality fish for cooking.

Herbert Fisheries fits best for people who value fresh local seafood presented simply, enjoy classic Canadian fish and chips made with catch-of-the-day fish, and want a friendly, unpretentious spot in the heart of Sudbury without the frills. If you’re craving fish and chips that taste like they came straight from nearby waters and served with a focus on tradition and freshness, this is where many locals and visitors find themselves returning.

Went here for the first time, we were excited when we found out they have pickerel dish and chips. The fish and chips had to be one of the best I’ve had...the pickerel filets were perfectly battered and fried, crispy. There were fresh cut fries....who eats fries when there is perfect t fish. I wish they made their own tartar sauce.

Made a pit stop here on the route home after a weekend at Killarney. Fast and efficient service with such friendly staff. The fish is cooked perfectly, with a thinly coated layer of batter that was still so crispy. The freshly cut fries were also delicious. They provide all the vinegar, salt, pepper, ketchup and sriracha you need - my only downside is they use kraft packets of tartar sauce but the fish is so good that you barely notice. They have picnic tables by the water so you can sit and eat, which makes it the perfect sunny lunch date!

Best Fish and Chips Anywhere I work with a small Coast Guard buoy tender, Caribou Isle, and we always make sure to stop here for the delicious fish and chips. They use fresh caught whitefish which they catch themselves. Whitefish does not have a fishy taste as with other types of fish, this makes the deep fried fish and chips taste so light and flaky. I am originally from Nova Scotia and can say without hesitation that this is the best fish and chips I have ever had! I just wish I could drop in more often than once every few years :-)

Real fish and chips here. This means the fish is fresh out of the water and ony dusted rather than battered. The fries are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. People who like fast food from the big chains may not fall in love with them. We drive 300 km once a year to have them, and the local airport is often full because of private plains, coming as far as from the States to enjoy this dish, right on the harbor dock. New is, that you have to order inside at the order desk.

We did a takeout order of the Adult Fish combo that included several freshly fried pieces of fish and great russet potato French fries. We also got orders of fried pickles, onion rings and mushroom caps. The food was all crispy and fresh and we liked that it wasn’t too greasy. The fried pickles were a real standout and we loved the spiced breading on them with the ranch dipping sauce. A must-stop in Sudbury when visiting.

(I haven’t had much fish and chips previously but...) it was the best I’ve ever had! Fish was delicious, with a delicate batter. The staff weren’t overly enthusiastic but the food and location are perfect. Mind you, if you’re looking for anything besides fish and chips, better go else where - that’s all they serve but it’s top notch. Perfect to top off a trip to Killarney Provincial Park.
